The study was concluded for the provision of a total of 2 GW of base load electricity capacity to the National Grid from local industrial zones in Tanzania.
The first step will be to locate a 800MW natural gas turbine power station in Bagamoyo for the new Bagamoyo port, EPZ centre, hotels and housing schemes. Bagamoyo is looked at as the future of Dar es Salaam.
The second step would involve the installation of an additional 1.2 GW of power capacity spread across various locations on the Coast line of Tanzania. These power plants will most likely be based close to areas or ports where significant economic development is planned and phased to match the upgrading of the relevant parts of the national grid to accommodate the new levels of power. Typically these locations could be Mtwara, KilwaMasoko, Rufiji, Pangani and Tanga. In total, this capacity will reduce the reliance on power generated from oil.
The project would require investment solutions for upgrading of National Grid infrastructure in developing nations so as to accommodate additional power fed into the Grid. This engagement can be expanded to enable the upgrading of the Tanzanian grid to accommodate the new power generating capacity.
